My computer is littered with many finished first drafts that I closed the book on and moved on. But the past few years I've had that itch to do something more. I spent a year writing a draft for a fantasy story that felt like it had all the beats but none of the heart I was looking for. It told a story that I wanted to tell but not in a way that was compelling enough. There is so much great general writing advice out there but I realized that none of it was speaking to what a fantasy novel needs for its story.
